Vacuum erection device for ED 04, EDC Gold Coast, Dr Campbell

A vacuum erection device is one of the erectile dysfunction treatment options offered by Dr Campbell at his Gold Coast clinic.

The device works by creating negative pressure that draws venous blood into the penis. A constriction ring is then rolled around the base of the penis to keep the penis erect.

Dr Campbell predominantly uses vacuum erection devices as a part of a rehabilitation program that prevents loss of length after prostatic surgery. Some patients can also use it for penetrative intercourse if need be though.

One of the limitations of the vacuum erection device is that if the ring isn’t around the very base of the penis, the penis can pivot and turn blue and cold after ten to fifteen minutes of use. Another downside is that if the patient ejaculates, the fluid can get caught behind the constriction ring, which can be uncomfortable.

However, the vacuum erection device is a reasonable option for some patients who can cope with this effect over the long term.

If you are interested in the vacuum erection device for reasons relating to erectile dysfunction, Dr Campbell will take you through all of the available treatment options at his Gold Coast clinic so that you can make an informed decision.

Vacuum Erection Device: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a vacuum erection device?

A vacuum erection device consists of a cylinder pump and a constriction band. To use the device, place the pump over the cylinder pump over the penis. The device will then pump the air out of the cylinder to create a vacuum, which draws blood into the shaft of the penis, causing it to become erect. The constriction band can now be lowered onto the end of the penis and the pump can be removed.

Intercourse should be attempted with the constriction band in place but it shouldn’t be used for longer than 30 minutes.

Who should consider a vacuum erection device?

A vacuum erection device is safe for use by patients with erectile dysfunction of any cause. Patients with congenital bleeding disorders, or any other blood condition should in general not use a vacuum erection device due to risk of excessive bruising.

What are the side effects of a VE device?

As you can imagine, a natural erection and one that was obtained using a VC device are not the same. When using a VE device, it’s not uncommon for the penis to be cold and purple in colour. Patients may also experience some bruising on the shaft of the penis. However, the bruising will subside within a few days and it won’t be painful. There will also be a decrease in the force of ejaculation but this is nothing to be concerned about.

How soon can I use a VE device after prostatectomy?

Men who have undergone a prostatectomy in general are advised to use a VED as soon as practical after surgery in an attempt to prevent loss of penile length. Dr Campbell will be able to give you a more accurate idea of when you can start using a VE device and if it’s necessary during your follow-up visit.

What is the best vacuum erection device?

While there are several different options available on the market, Dr Campbell prefers to use a very specific brand, which he will introduce you to during your consultation at his Gold Coast clinic.
